Sainsbury’s Leicester
KEY FACTS
Sainsbury’s has delivered a better retail offering, as well as a revitalised space for the local community in Leicester.
The multimillion pound redevelopment of Belgrave Road has reinvigorated the southern end of the Golden Mile. An existing Sainsbury’s supermarket will be replaced with smaller shops, business units, and food and drink outlets.
In order to make way for the development, an obsolete concrete flyover was demolished. The project was carefully managed by Motion to ensure existing traffic flows were maintained, and disruption to residents and businesses was minimised.
Motion helped Sainsbury’s to achieve the council’s aspirations for a more welcoming environment on the Golden Mile and strengthened links with the city centre, while meeting the challenges of managing traffic flows in a congested part of Leicester.
Highway improvements for a new store in Melton Road, Rushey Mead were also supported by Motion. The supermarket has created 80,000 square feet of net sales area on a former GE Lighting site. The off-site works provided capacity for traffic flows associated with the new supermarket and future employment development. The scheme included the provision of crossing facilities with improved pedestrian and cycle paths, linking the store to the surrounding area and addressing road safety issues.
